Supporting Independence Through Innovation: Credo Care & Wizzybug

At Credo Care Fostering, everything we do is centred around giving children with additional needs the opportunity to live full, meaningful lives within a family environment.

For over 25 years, we have supported children with disabilities, complex health needs, and life-limiting conditions. Many of the children we care for join us at a very young age and grow up within the stability and care of our fostering families.

We believe that every child deserves not only to feel safe and loved, but to experience independence, joy and inclusion in everyday life.

Exploring New Opportunities for the Children We Support

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving outcomes for children, we are always looking for ways to enhance what we offer whether that’s through training, support, or accessing the right equipment.

Recently, we have been chatting with Designability, an inclusive design charity with a long history of creating practical solutions for disabled people. One of their most well-known innovations is the Wizzybug, a powered wheelchair designed specifically for very young children.

What is Wizzybug?

The Wizzybug is designed for children typically aged between 2 and 5, although some begin using it even earlier. It is a safe, child-friendly powered wheelchair that allows children to move independently and explore the world around them.

What makes Wizzybug particularly special is its focus on early development and independence. Children are able to:

  • Move and explore alongside their peers
  • Develop an understanding of cause and effect through movement
  • Build confidence and communication through interaction with their environment

Even small, unintentional movements can help build important connections and support development. For many children, this is their first experience of being able to move independently, something that can have a lasting impact.

Why This Matters for Our Families

At Credo Care Fostering, we support children across a variety of settings, including Long-Term and Short Term foster care, in addition to respite and short break arrangements. Many of the children we work with require specialist equipment, and ensuring consistency across different homes can sometimes be challenging.

Innovations like Wizzybug can make a real difference by offering something that is:

  • Accessible and practical for foster families
  • Portable, making it easier to use in everyday situations
  • Empowering for children, giving them greater independence

It also supports something that is central to our ethos, helping children to take part in family life, outings, and everyday experiences in ways that feel natural and inclusive.

A Shared Commitment to Inclusion

What stands out in our conversations with Designability is a strong shared value: the importance of inclusive design.

Their work focuses on creating solutions where gaps exist, listening to the lived experiences of disabled people, families, and carers to understand what is really needed. This aligns closely with our approach at Credo Care Fostering, where every child’s needs are unique, and listening to those around them is key.

Designability are currently inviting families and carers to contribute to their Unfair Index, a piece of research exploring the everyday barriers faced by disabled people. This type of work is vital in shaping future solutions and ensuring that the voices of carers and young people are heard. Looking Ahead

We are excited about the potential of introducing and promoting approaches like Wizzybug across Credo Care Fostering.

Becoming a Foster Carer with Credo Care Fostering

At the heart of all of this are our foster carers. Opening your home to a child with additional needs is both a challenge and a privilege, but above all, it is an opportunity to make a genuine difference.

Fostering with Credo Care means:

  • Providing a safe, nurturing home for a child who needs it
  • Supporting a child to grow in confidence and independence
  • Being part of a wider, supportive community

It’s about creating opportunities, building relationships, and helping every child reach their potential. We would love to hear from you. www.credocare.co.uk
